Episode 55 - Post-FCC Debrief (with Snacks)
The breakroom was calm again.
The microwave was humming something close to the “Twilight Zone” theme. The tea kettle whispered gossip in steam. And someone—probably Charles—had drawn a mustache on the laminated Emergency Visitor Poster.
Olivia walked in with her mug and the paper crane.
Everyone was already there.
Miss LaDonna stirred honey into her tea. “She didn’t scream. That’s something.”
Charles was sifting through a stack of rewritten blueprints, muttering, “I give her two weeks before she submits a formal classification request for ‘metaphysical anomaly disguised as public access.’”
Bernard floated near the ceiling, watching a dust mote orbit his favorite ceiling tile.
He said, “She didn’t notice the echo delay on her own words. That’s always the test.”
Olivia set the paper crane on the counter.
It blinked once. Then turned to face Bernard.
He gently nudged it into the toaster.
No one said a word.
The toaster dinged.
Out popped a slice of toast with “PENDING” burnt into the crust.
Charles took a bite. “Tastes like bureaucracy.”
Lurch walked in, handed Olivia a folded note, nodded to the others, and silently left again.
She unfolded it.
“Next time: decaf chamomile and a reality buffer pad under the guest chair.”
Miss LaDonna raised her mug. “To the receptionist.”
Bernard echoed her: “To the anchor.”
Charles raised a slightly radioactive donut: “To our filter, firewall, and frontline defense.”
They all clinked, awkwardly, with mugs and toast and things that shouldn’t clink.
Olivia took a sip.
And smiled.
