Episode 68 - Proof of Concept

9:26 a.m. — Lobby

The agents conferred in hushed tones.

Olivia didn’t lean in. She didn’t need to.

The building was listening. So was she.

The one in the lab coat finally spoke.

“We’ll need to see the broadcast source.”

Olivia nodded once. “I’ll notify technical.”

9:27 a.m. — Hallway Between

Charles answered the intercom with his usual flair:

“Oh good, I do so enjoy guided tours.”

Miss LaDonna was already halfway to the control hub.

She placed her hand against the wall.

The hallway responded.

It stretched.

Made room.

9:29 a.m. — Lobby

The unblinking one didn’t blink.

He asked:

“And if your station is found non-compliant?”

Olivia’s tail flicked once.

She stood up.

And walked around the desk.

Deliberate. Calm.

She placed her hand on the inner door.

And said:

“Then you’ll see what you came to find.”

9:30 a.m. — The Tour Begins Again

The doors opened.

The agents followed.

Charles greeted them with his usual charm.

“Ah! Our friends from the Un-Seeing Department.”

Miss LaDonna simply gestured down the hall.

“This way.”

They passed the Archive.

Bernard floated above the vault door.

This time, even the unblinking one looked.

And for just a moment—he blinked.

Bernard pulsed.

Softly.

Approvingly.

They moved to the signal room.

Machines hummed.

Screens showed channels that shouldn’t exist.

A radio played a song in reverse that still made perfect sense.

Charles gestured grandly.

“Here is your proof. But be warned—some things broadcast back.”

The agents were quiet.

They began scanning.

Taking notes.

Their equipment flickered.

The suit began asking questions that made no sense out loud.

“How long has your signal existed outside time?” “Are your viewers consenting?” “Who owns the resonance?”

Miss LaDonna stepped forward.

She held no clipboard.

No badge.

Just presence.

And said:

“You came looking for evidence. But what you really want is permission. To label what you don’t understand. To decide if it’s allowed to exist.”

She stepped closer to the suit.

“You don’t get that power here.”

The suit opened her mouth.

To speak.

To argue.

To declare something.

But the air shifted.

A pressure. Not loud. Not harsh.

Just a signal.

Subtle. But clear.

From the lobby: Olivia whispered.

“Come out, come out, whatever you are.”

And they did.

From the signal room: Charles. Bowler hat tilted. Tie askew. The lights around him shimmered like old filmstock.

Miss LaDonna, radiant, untouchable, every word she’d ever spoken folding into her silhouette.

Bernard, massive now. Glowing. Coherent and terrible and beautiful. Eyes upon eyes. Stories in every limb.

From the stairs: Lurch, still. Silent. Present.

And then the Hosts arrived.

Not by name.

Not by fanfare.

Just… presence.

Eighteen in total.

Some with capes.

Some with scars.

Some with grins that remembered too much.

Some who had not been seen in years.

The suits stared.

The unblinking one covered his eyes.

The air tasted like burnt analog and forgotten dreams.

Olivia stepped forward.

Ears high.

Tail steady.

Behind her: the staff.

Around her: the station.

Before her: those who tried to measure the immeasurable.

She said, softly:

“We are not yours to define. We are not yours to permit. We are not asking.”

And with that, the lights flickered once.

The broadcast shimmered.

And the agents were… gone.

Not vanished. Just returned.

Somewhere safe. Somewhere far.

The station exhaled.

Everyone else stayed.

Because this was home.

Because she called them.

Because now… she could.

Olivia walked back to her desk.

Straightened her nameplate.

Fed the mail cart a thank-you treat.

And opened her logbook to a new page.

She wrote:

“Received visitors. Offered tour. Clarified purpose.”

She paused.

Then added:

“All accounted for. All home.”
