Episode 69 - When the Future Was Ready

It was the day after.

The station moved softly, like a cat that had seen ghosts and made peace with them.

Olivia arrived at her usual time.

Tea. Paperwork. Logbook entry:

“Yesterday held.”

On her desk sat the reel.

She’d moved it there quietly, without fanfare.

It bore her name.

A future date.

That date had come.

She didn’t ask Bernard.

Didn’t need to.

He was near, of course. Not watching. Just aware.

She stood. Took the reel in both hands. And walked.

The Vault recognized her now.

She didn’t need clearance.

Didn’t need keys.

It opened.

Because it knew who she was.

The screening room inside was small.

Enough for one.

She placed the reel on the projector.

Threaded it by instinct.

Sat down.

And pressed play.

It began with silence.

Then: static.

Then: her own voice.

Not recorded. Not dubbed.

Just her.

Reading aloud.

“I remember who I was. And I know who I am.”

The screen flickered.

Flashed images—

Her first day.

The knock at 7:42 a.m.

The Host in the hallway who smiled before knowing her name.

Fibb.

The letter.

The mask.

Lurch’s nod.

The moment she opened the door and said “Welcome.”

All overlaid with her voice.

“I am not here by accident. I am not pretending. I was never wearing a costume. I was always becoming.”

The final frame was a photo.

A candid.

Her. At her desk. Smiling.

Tail curled around the chair leg. Mug in hand. Bernard floating nearby, mid-chuckle.

Charles and Miss LaDonna in the background.

It wasn’t a picture she remembered being taken.

But she believed it.

The reel ended.

She sat for a long time.

No tears. No trembling.

Just stillness.

A warmth that hadn’t needed permission to arrive.

She rewound the reel.

Labeled it.

“Filed: Resolved.”

Then returned it to the Vault.

Under a new shelf marker:

“Reception: Permanent.”

She returned to her desk.

And the station sighed around her. A deep, low, satisfied breath.

It knew.

So did she.

The signal carried on.

So did the stories.

Because this was OtherWorlds TV.

And Olivia was no longer the new girl at the desk.

She was—

Home.
